Education Internships in Washington, DC

Communications Internship Position Description
Interns in the communications department of Public Education Network (PEN) assist the department in a wide range of editorial and public-relations work, including research, writing, editing, proofreading, fact checking, and related activities.

Preferred applicants are current college students or recent graduates in journalism, mass communications, English, education, or political science. Strong writing skills are essential, as are accuracy, attention to detail, and an interest in helping to improve public education. Some computer proficiency also is necessary. Previous editorial experience, knowledge of Web design, and creativity are highly valued.
 

General duties may include:

1.

Helping to prepare material for the PEN Weekly NewsBlast, an electronic newsletter about public school reform, school finance, and related issues.

2.

Helping to write and/or edit other communications material for the organization's internal use, its members, and the general public.

3.

Monitoring and responding to e-mail received by Public Education Network on a daily basis.

4.

Posting content (approved new material, updates, and other changes) to PEN's website.

5.

Answering telephones and other office activities (copying, faxing, etc.).
