Education Internships in Washington, DC

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and Public Engagement Internship

General Description
This interns position will report to Arnold Fege and Jeanette McCall and will be responsible for assisting in the work, administration, management, activities, and organization for various elements of PEN's public engagement efforts as related to the NCLB Action Briefs and Training materials, the NCLB hearings planning and preparation, coverage of Hill meetings and hearings, and NCLB research. In addition, the intern will track other PEN priority legislation and policies. The intern must be proficient in Microsoft tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and will be given the opportunity to post information on PEN’s website and to help with PEN’s e-Advocacy strategy.

Scope of Work
No Child Left Behind
 

1.

Update the current NCLB Action Briefs

2.

Help develop and research a new Action Briefs

3.

Assist in developing a NCLB Power Point Presentation for training purposes

4.

Daily mapping of NCLB articles for website display

5.

Assist in developing NCLB.PublicEducation.org web portal

6.

Assist in research of new NCLB interactive CD-ROM


Hill and Agency Work:
 

1.

Attend and cover Hill and agency meetings on issues relevant to PEN and summarize results of each meeting. (one Senate Hearing; one House Hearing; one Educational Hearing-if available.; one meeting with a House of Rrepresentatives member and one with a U.S. Senator; one with a U.S. Department. of Education official; and one U.S. Capitol Tour.

2.

Accompany PEN staff to meetings outside of office and visit various Washington-based organizations. These organizations include: Center for Summer Learning; Children’s Defense Fund; DC Voice; Committee for Education Funding; 21st Century Schools; Council for Exceptional Children, among others.


General:
 

1.

Other policy work and analysis as required

2.

Assist with the work of the PEN Policy Committee, as needed

3.

Assist with the implementation of PEN’s National Civic Index for Public Eeducation

4.

Administrative support including events and travel logistics; drafting and editing correspondence; copying; and other duties as assigned.
