Since 2001, Public Education Network has been polling the American public on what they perceive to be their responsibility for assuring quality public education. These landmark polls, conducted by some of the most respected national polling firms such as Peter Hart & Associates and Lake Research Associates, in partnership with Education Week, have provided much information, including: what Americans value about public education; what voters want their public officials to do to raise achievement levels; what attributes the public want in candidates who say they are education candidates; and actions community members should take to support high quality public schools. In four different polls, PEN asked the public what kinds of community civic actions, behaviors and elements are necessary to have high achieving schools. National polls conducted in 2006 and 2008 measured the public’s commitment to becoming involved in supporting and holding public schools accountable.
