WENDY D. PURIEFOY

Wendy
D. Puriefoy is a nationally recognized expert on issues
of school reform and civil society. Ms. Puriefoy is well
known for her passionate advocacy of education equity
for poor and disadvantaged children and has written and
spoken extensively on the issues.
The Wendy D. Puriefoy Award was created by the PEN Board
of Directors to honor Wendy for a lifetime of advocacy
for quality public education, social justice, and increased
opportunity, and decades of exemplary dedication, uncommon
vision, personal sacrifice, and steadfast advocacy on
behalf of America’s children.
The Wendy D. Puriefoy Award recognizes distinguished
contribution by a local education fund to create conditions
of learning that benefit all children. The first recipient
of the award is the Boston Plan for Excellence in the
Public Schools for outstanding work in whole-school reform
and professional development for teachers.
The inaugural award was presented to Ellen Guiney, executive
director of the Boston Plan for Excellence in the Public
Schools, on Sunday, November 9, 2003, during a gala celebration
of 20 years of achievement by local education funds.
